Patients infected by hepatitis C virus (HCV) in Canada have limited use of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) agents, according to a different study.
“There are lots of new DAAs, marketed by different pharmaceutical companies. We studied reimbursement practices for simeprevir, sofosbuvir, ledipasvir-sofosbuvir and paritaprevir-ritonavir-ombitasvir plus dasabuvir. We discovered that 85% to 92% from the provinces and territories in Canada restrict use of these medications to persons with moderate fibrosis,” lead author Alison Marshall in the Kirby Institute in the College of recent South Wales—Australia, told Medical Financial aspects.
Marshall and colleagues reviewed the reimbursement criteria for individuals DAAs in Canada’s 10 provinces and three territories. Although Canada’s 10 provinces and three territories are with each other controlled by the Canada Health Act, every jurisdiction administers its very own health plan.
There have been no substance use limitations. However, several criteria, for example active injection drug abuse, were left towards the discretion from the physician, she stated.
Quebec didn’t compensate simeprevir and sofosbuvir for individuals co-have contracted Aids, however the province is progressively lifting limitations on use of DAAs according to fibrosis stage. No limitations were based in the remaining jurisdictions. Prescriber type was limited to specialists in as much as 42% of provinces/territories.
They printed their results on October 14, 2016 in CMAJ Open.
The research authors, including researchers in the College of Montreal Hospital Research Center, the Kirby Institute and also the Canadian Network on Hepatitis C, estimate there are about 220,000 patients with chronic HCV infection in Canada. It’s believed that about one-quarter of the population will build up cirrhosis through the year 2035. In 2013, the price of taking care of Canadians with HCV-related cirrhosis was $161 million. By 2035, the price of care is anticipated to increase to around $258 million each year.
As opposed to Canada, around three-quarters of condition fee-for-service State medicaid programs plans within the U.S. limit reimbursement to patients with proof of advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis (stage F3 or F4). “Clinical guidelines condition that patients with chronic HCV infection, regardless of disease stage, should receive treatment, including prioritization for treating populations vulnerable to transmitting HCV, that’s, individuals who inject drugs,” they mentioned.
An evaluation through the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health demonstrated that treating patients across all fibrosis stages is cost-effective. Also, several U.S. states have removed fibrosis stage limitations following potential lawsuits from patients. “Considering that management of HCV infection for those who inject drugs is effective and safe, is cost-effective and would prevent HCV transmission, elimination of these limitations is warranted,” they mentioned.
Almost half of Canadian jurisdictions restrict prescriber type to specialists. Specialists might be better educated to oversee DAA-based therapy in selected conditions, for example decompensated cirrhosis, however the researchers claim that general practitioners should discover education, training and linkage to HCV specialists to broaden use of therapy.

25 Years From Discovery To Cure: The Hepatitis C Story | Nezam Afdhal | TEDxOxford
Ipostle: So you're leaving it up to governments(which means tax payers) to decide to pay the ransom for curing hep c patients. Kind of let the Drug companies off the hook didn't you?
Eben Burger: Bunch of Crookes….. Robbing people…. Charging 1000 usd/day for 1 tablet?! That's worse than stabbing someone in the back!
kaiser hussain shah: God bless you
John Raiche: Definitely NOT the most expensive substance on earth… But still amazing (and expensive!)
serferten: The equally "something big" is how Gilead seller, they didn't develop the drug, has chosen to brazenly chase backbreaking profits leaving many without the "something big" drug or maybe near bankrupting them and cutting deep into scarce public health funds. Please cut the HYPE!
Steven K Harrison: I have Hep C. I was only recently diagnosed and I am told that it is in a passive state. No one can say how long I have had it, but I would guess many years. Tomorrow I will go to a clinic in Vienna, Austria and, if approved, I will begin the treatment. My house Physician told me that the treatment would cost about 50 thousand Euros. That is a hell of a lot of money and I could never afford to pay for it. BUT, I live in Austria and we have one of the best national health plans in the world. I will pay nothing. This is awesome! Science is amazing! THANK YOU TO ALL THE DOCTORS, RESEARCHERS AND CHEMISTS THAT HAVE MADE THIS POSSIBLE! And Thank you to the Austrian Health Insurance system!
Alex Mason: I'm 16 and I got hepatitis C from blood to blood contact after getting beat up. sucks.\nI'm really messed up already and I've lost 20lbs in the past 2 weeks. I keep vomiting and feeling nauseous all the time. I'm so tired yet I can't sleep.\nThey are testing me for liver cancer tomorrow. I isn't supposed to kill you this fast I don't know why I'm getting so bad. I've only eaten 2 bowls of cereal in the last 5 days. I passed out earlier today.\nDoes someone know how I could get the cure here in Canada for cheap? We're poor and we barely have enough money to pay for rent and food etc. I really don't want to die please help me and message back if you have any tips to cure hepatitis C. Thank you.
Eben Burger: Alex Mason U can try this: it doesn't taste great, but just do it…. . Take 5 cloves of raw garlic, and blend it with 500ml boiling water. Let it cool down. Add 1tbs apple cider vinegar and 1 tbs fresh lemon juice. Drink while still warm. Finish it as soon as you can…. Repeat every day untill ur fully cured.
Basil Rathbonez: Alex Mason4 + Even though you have Hepatitis, you should take as much\nMilk Thistle as you can to help protect your liver as the Hep virus does its\ndamage….check with alternative medicine doctors…but take your vaccine.\nMore people die from mushroom poisoning in the state of West Virginia,\nthan any other state in the USA, because people there like to hunt for wild mushrooms(every edible mushroom has a lookalike poison)and the \nhospitals there give them Milk Thistle initially to protect the liver
James T: Thank you for sharing! There are legitimate caring professionals assisting patients with HepC accessible at the website FixHepC. There is another website GP2U that is a virtual physician site that can assist with diagnosis and treatment. The medications, Direct Acting Antivirals (DAAs) for certain genotypes can be acquired for less than $2000. The 12 weeks therapy has a 90% positive outcome with minimal side effects. Good luck to all!
